As such, I recently reread Yerby’s debut and wanted to comment on a couple of items that I noticed. "The Foxes of Harrow," released in 1947, like a lot of Fox movies, is reminiscent of classics made at other studios. In 1939, Yerby entered the University of Chicago to work toward his doctorate but later left the univ.Born in Augusta, Georgia to Rufus Garvin Yerby, an African American, and Wilhelmina Smythe, who was caucasian. The Civil War is much more in-focus in GWTW, whereas it really only comes into focus in the last 20 pages of Foxes of Harrow. I stand by it. Thereafter, Yerby enrolled in Fisk University where he received his Master's degree in 1938. In Ireland, in 1795, the master of the House of Harrow orders his servants, Sean and Sara Fox, to rear his daughter's illegitimate baby. What is even more amazing was to "google" Frank Yerby, the author, and find that "Foxes of Harrow" was the first bestselling book by an African-American author (his father was Black, his mother was Caucasian) to hit the shelves, doing so in 1946.Superb writing and storytelling. Some beautiful man smitten by a beautiful woman, beautiful woman dies and the man discovers that the lesser beautiful woman who has always stood behind him was always more beautiful than beautiful woman 1. The book bore more than a passing resemblance to other historical romances like Gone With the Wind and Anthony Adverse, but its first-time author was an original. A massive runaway historical best-sellers during the forties that, like so many others, became a Hollywood superproduction, The Foxes of Harrow is a fascinating and, for its time, quite daring piece of popular literature : Yerby, an African-American author, decided to write what, until then, was only done by white writers : a tumultuous epic about the old South. Years later I read more about Yerby -- and was saddened at the thought of the hatred of whites he seemed to keep within. Ha, also occassionally you'll have his characteristic slip of modern-day speach into the text, but it makes it interesting.I just re-read this book for the 5th time just to see if age had changed my perspective at all on Yerby's writing. The Civil War has just ended, and Stephen ponders what the racism and hate that Etienne carries within himself will bring for the future. I really like Frank Yerby's work in that he really immerses you in culture, while you're captivated by his main character. I have loved all his books that I have read.A poor riverboat gambler wins a plantation, marries the most beautiful woman in the county, and is happy until he sees the quadroon Desiree.I read all of Mr. Yerby's books when I was a teenager and am now re-reading them. So do the women, of course; he's a sensitive writer.I just finished a re-read of this book. We just returned from New Orleans and did a couple of plantation tours, so the book was fun for me in that I recognized so many terms that used to be foreign to me, like a "quadroon ball" or "octoroon". He gambled, won and built "Harrow," the greatest mansion house and plantation in Louisiana.
