It’s not something new to gaming, but the way it works is certainly different from the norm.You see – it takes a little while to get to level 10, so that means that you either have to replay some of the inaugural races, download new ones, or play online for a while. Unfortunately, a bad system for unlocking new stuff and a severe lack of content really hold Alive back from reaching its full potential. After selecting which class you want to race in (there are three bike and two quad classes to choose from), you're placed into a lobby with other players, and between races, you get to vote on which track is raced next.Whereas MX vs. ATV Reflex offered a number of different gameplay modes, Alive offers only races and a Free Ride mode in which you're encouraged to explore sand dunes and quarries while completing challenges.
The core of the gameplay here is racing on either an ATV or essentially a motorcycle. You can unlock abilities like faster crash recovery and a boost to knocking your opponents out of whack. But the limited number of different events isn’t the big issue. Yes, there are decent tracks you can unlock as you delve deeper through the game, but the problem is you must play through the same levels over and over again to unlock the good stuff. MX vs. ATV Alive is a blast to play. Leveling up unlocks all manner of extra customization options. The two on-disc Free Ride areas offer a platter of big jumps set on dunes or a quarry. The latter type allows you to drive around in two large areas (a quarry and a beach) without the fear of having to race other competitors. It's the same system that was used in Reflex, and it works well; races are far less frustrating when you're not falling off after every mistake and you're not punished for riding aggressively.At the end of every race, both you and your currently selected vehicle earn experience points and levels. However, there’s a large discrepancy within the races’ difficulty levels, as rookie is far too easy allowing for very easy wins with large differentials while the next difficulty level (amateur) is quite difficult. Not only do you have to use both analog sticks to control your vehicle and rider independently of each other, but the game also makes no attempt to explain more advanced techniques: using the clutch to get off the start line quickly or to maintain speed through corners, or locking your seat bounce to preload for a jump, for example. Experience can be earned in Free Ride for performing long jumps, catching a lot of air, locating a secret vehicle in each of the three locales, and performing tricks.
MX vs ATV Alive promised a brand new RPG-like progression that would be easy to get into for the newbie, but at the same time would provide infinite depth for the hardcore gamer. It's not all good news in this scant sequel to.Climbing onto either a 125cc motocross bike or a 250cc quad in MX vs. ATV Alive as a level 1 rider can be daunting, particularly if you never played Reflex. It isn’t until level ten that you can play more advanced game modes with higher ranked players, though a lot of them seem to like to play against the rookies in the default modes. You’ll unlock items to customize your bike or ATV, abilities for your character, and of course new levels—two cycles unlocked at level 10 and 25.
There are some visual gripes in regards to both split screen and online play, but nothing that really detracts from the otherwise fast action.
