Hopefully, the weather will have been kind to you and you’re rewarded with the majestic views of Snowdonia, particularly the Carneddau, across to Anglesey, down the Lleyn Peninsula and in the opposite direction, towards the Great Orme and Liverpool beyond. Glyder Fawr was a more straightforward affair. Then at the top of the gully I could look over to the west side of Tryfan for the first time on the walk with a view to the western tip of Llyn Ogwen, to Afon Ogwen valley and to the valley road out of Snowdonia leading to Bethesda and the north Wales coast and Anglesey at Bangor.When I reached the top of the gully I assumed I was somewhere near the top of the mountain. Here’s a map of the route, and feel free to explain the comments why anyone would want to bother with this route!This is a good track, eroded in places, that starts in Glan Denau on the A5 and ascends past Tryfan up Cwm Tryfan. And between me and the summit were 200 metres of thrilling mountain ridge walking and scrambling, much more challenging and exciting than Striding Edge and Sharp Edge, the popular Lake District icons. I could clearly see the route up and over Crib Goch which I was going to cross for the first time during my next walk on the next day. The name derives from the highest peaks in the range, Glyder Fawr and Glyder Fach.
The mountain is located on the main Glyder massif sitting between Glyder Fach (994m) and Y Garn (947m) and offers some magnificent views with Snowdon (1085m) to the south and Tryfan (917m) and the Carneddau to the north and northwest. Again I was drawn to look out to the west and across the west most mountains of Snowdonia to the shimmering blue of the Irish Sea. Considering that both are be regarded as a Grade 1 scramble, makes us think that Grade 1 scrambles need splitting into two grades.This is a grade one scramble up Glyder Fawr that startd from the shores of Llyn Idwal. I took time after each short burst up the mountain to determine my next course and then took steps accordingly. At regular intervals I took short breaks to relax from my haul up to the heights of Tryfan. I continued straight up and across Heather Terrace. The only thing is that they should be called Cludair Fawr and Cludair Fach or the Cludeiriau (which would invariably and unfortunately be anglicised to Cluders),This is the infamous scree path! 5 Summit of Glyder Fawr (SH 642 579) The summit of Glyder Fawr stands at 1,001m.
