I’m annoyed that the owner of the house lose control so easily yet I’m fascinated how people are good at manipulating other people into doing things they don’t normally do. What they discover is the dead, decomposing bodies of the Lamb parents, and that of another mystery man, with a note that suggests a cult suicide, but strangely they find a 10 month old baby alive and well cared for, Serenity Lamb, who is later to be adopted. The book starts out smoldering and doesn’t really shift into high gear until page 150, then it really takes off.
It’s about power, and survival, and recovering, and not recovering. Her memory reminds me of the book Behind Closed Doors, though I rather action instead of mostly recollection. Henry had been drugging Phin to make himself look good, but also because he loved him. That takes a long time, and The family upstairs was really captivating, so I didn't have time to read the actual book club book. Henry, the son is my favorite character. He has tried to turn himself into Phin, but can't be him fully if the real Phin exists (and exists so beautifully). November 5th 2019

I enjoyed reading Lucy’s life with her children but not so much with her memory of Michael. Spoilers! THE FAMILY UPSTAIRS is told from three perspectives: Henry, Lucy and Libby’s. A mix of mystery, murder, cult, family, and a few weirdos thrown in. I can’t decide if I’m annoyed or fascinated by it all. The story is also set to run as a TV series.
